Haslam Park BOOT CAMP #1 March 11 Review

Boot camp is approaching its final sessions for March 2011. The clocks went back and we are no longer working out in twilight. The sun was out for session #5, a gruelling kettlebell and agility workout that packed a punch into the thighs and the core muscles.
We did a quick weigh in, with people revealing some positive results on the scales. Others reported a conflict of interests with busy social lives causing dietary lapses over the weekend!!

A concerted effort to curb and control the intake of white starchy foods is required to make serious inroads into the fat stores. This doesn't have to mean giving up eating. In fact, the best method is to substitute your portion of rice, pasta, bread, potatoes (ALL OF WHICH CONTAIN HUGE QUANTITIES OF HIGH SUGAR CALORIES THAT YOUR BODY JUST LOVES TO SLOT INTO THE FAT STORES) with green and wholefood alternatives.
Starchy foods are either processed or created to contain as much energy as possible in a small spoonful. Wholefoods are largely unprocessed and unchanged from when they were picked off the ground, the plant or the tree.
Substitute wholefoods for white starchy carbs as often as possible. For example, eat a few more eggs, prepare fruit smoothies, eat whole fruit, prepare soups with mixed vegetables and stock (HOME MADE IS FAR TASTIER THAN TINNED) and keep a well stock bowl in the fridge full of home made fruit salad. This takes a bit of planning and a bit of preparation, but it soon becomes a habit.
Also, in between sessions, any extra cardio you can do will help to keep the metabolism moving. Anything from walking, jogging, gym or other classes will do, just keep moving.
Right, lecture over.

Haslam Park BOOT CAMP MARCH '11

Well done to all at Haslam Park Boot Camp session #1.
You all gave it a top effort, took on the challenges and emerged unscathed at the end.
Here are some ideas to think about in between boot camp sessions:

Complete a diet diary and hand it in on Wednesday. Just record everything you eat and drink, when, and how much. Include small details like "semi-skimmed milk", "grilled" chicken or 1 pint wine! Be honest and then look at the areas you might address in order to add goodness and remove excess and unnecessary calories). It is not always a case of giving up the tastiest things!
Cardio or other exercises
Try to do other forms of exercise and activity. It doesn't have to be at the gym but can be games, walking, swimming, dancing or if you can, use the gym too, do it, but keep changing what you do from day to day.
The only limit on how much you exercise is you. Unless your muscles ache so much that you can't move, you can still get your body moving in other ways, every day. Forget 3 times a week walking. Get moving! Twice a day if you can!
Next time...
Next time we meet we'll focus on some core and speed work. I'll try to keep it changing so we hit the muscles in different ways throughout.
The diet book and website, that Sheila mentioned, is The Dukan Diet the website is here and Dukan's book is here.

A great start. Well done.
